TREMORS Performance Festival: San Francisco Dec 16th, 2007 20 mins
An Exercise in Anal Excavation #1 is the first in a series of time based works exploring the anus as a site of shame/pleasure; a site of resistance; a site of identity production; a site of possibility. Excavation #1 was devised under my direction with a group of queer kids from San Francisco with different (intersecting) backgrounds, professions and relationships to both performance and the anus. Through workshops, play and conversations we arrived at a piece that included movement, broken narratives, a spelling bee, a tableaux vivant and a sexual act. In order to resist assimilating to heteronormative perceptions of our bodies, we must look to the most abject gaps of our flesh, to start anew, to start from below ground up.
